Selenium is an essential trace mineral that has powerful antioxidant properties to protect the body cells from free radical damage that could lead to degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and premature aging.
Studies have also found that selenium may be useful in lowering risk of certain cancers (e.g. breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers) due to its capability to fight against free radicals and enhance immunity.
Selenium is associated with thyroid health as it protects the thyroid against oxidative stress and is involved in the production of thyroid hormones.
