Wolfberry (Goji)
Latin Name: Lyceum Chinense/Lyceum Barbarum.
Other Name; Goji Berry
Type: Herb
Wolfberries are a good source of various nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, zinc, polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates), amino acids and antioxidants, particularly zeaxanthin.
Native to Asia, it is the fruit of either one of the two closely related species, Lyceum chinense or Lyceum barbarum and has been widely used as traditional Chinese herb and functional food in China and other Asian countries.
Several studies found that wolfberries can improve eye health and protect from ageing-related vision loss when taken on regular basis because they contain high levels of Zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin is an important dietary carotenoid antioxidant that plays a protective light-filtering role to protect our eyes from several vision problems such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Due to its high polysaccharides and antioxidants content, wolfberry is also found to be useful in other several health conditions, such as enhance immunity, maintain healthy blood sugar, and protect against heart diseases.
