Lutein is a carotenoid that is abundantly present in the macula of the human eye (or central areas of the retina). It has the ability to filter out UV and blue light, as well as fight free radical damage caused by these harmful light to protect the eyes from further damage. It may also helps lower the risk of age-related eye disorders such as macular degeneration and cataracts.
As the human body cannot produce lutein on its own, this antioxidant has to be obtained from our diet. Common food sources include leafy greens (e.g. kale and spinach), vegetables (e.g. peas and corns), fruits and egg yolk.
