Bitter melon is a plant that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is a common ingredient in Asian dishes, or blended into juice. Made into supplements, they are consumed for its ability to lower blood sugar.
Bitter melon regulate blood sugar due the presence of three active component, charantin, vicine, and polypeptide-p, which mimics insulin, the hormone that bring blood glucose into cells for energy. It also contain lectin, which suppresses appetite. In these ways many clinical studies support the link of bitter melon and blood sugar management. However, it is important to note that it is not a replacement of medications prescribed for diabetics.
