Zeaxanthin
Type: Antioxidant
Zeaxanthin is one of the carotenoids that can be found in high concentration in our eyes, especially the macula, lens, and retina.
Together with lutein, zeaxanthin acts as a potent antioxidant that plays an important role in maintaining vision health.
Due to its capability to reduce oxidative stress, high intakes of zeaxanthin and lutein are associated with reduced risks of age-related eye diseases, such as AMD (age-related macular degeneration), cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
Zeaxanthin is also known to protect our eyes from harmful high-energy light waves, such as ultraviolet rays from sunlight and blue light from electronic devices.
Common food sources include green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli, egg yolks, kiwis and grapes.
