What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are “good bacteria” that support a healthy digestive system by keeping growth of harmful bacteria at bay.
Why do we need to consume Probiotics?
Every human body carries more than 100 - 300 trillion bacteria and yeast. However, factors such as age, stress and poor diets can cause healthy bacteria levels to decline. Probiotics are therefore required to replenish good bacteria levels and keep a healthy balance of good microflora in your gut.
How are Probiotics differentiated?
Just like us, each Probiotic has its own family, and there are three different qualifiers that separate each Probiotic from another.
Genus – The strain’s extended family (eg. Bifidobacterium). Just like how we share the same surname as our cousins, some Probiotic species share the same name with others.
Species – The strain’s immediate family (eg. Lactis). Even though you and your siblings might have similar traits and properties, you might end up with different abilities and purposes. Likewise, different Probiotic species have abilities unique to them only.
Strain –The ultimate and simplest level of identification – the name of the Probiotic (e.g. B1-07). This helps the Probiotic remain recognizable within its own immediate family.
There are 2 main types of Probiotic Families:
- Lactobacillus – Naturally lives in the small intestine. Health benefits include healthy digestion and bowel regularity.
- Bifidobacterium – Takes residence in the large intestine (or colon). Health benefits include healthy immune function and better mood balance.
Research has shown that 2 Probiotic families combined together is more beneficial compared to 1 Probiotic family only, as they are able to target several health issues instead of just one. LAC Probiotic Complex series contain up to 14 different strains in each product.
